UAE's Search and Rescue team leaves for Britain for EU training

Abu Dhabi, Sept 7, 2010 (WAM)- The UAE Team for Search and Rescue left for Britain yesterday to participate in the exercise of the European Union for the search and rescue operations.
UAE's participation in the event due to start tomorrow comes as per directives from the Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister H.H Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The three-day intensive training will enhance UAE Team's capabilities to provide critical assistance in the field of search and rescue operations in the friendly countries in the event of disasters, thus giving the country a radiant image.
Director of Emergency Management and Public Safety at the General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police Colonel Mohammed Abdullah Al Nuaimi said that the team is consisted of 52 commissioned and non-commissioned officers and personnel who specialise in search and rescue.
He pointed out that this participation has received considerable attention of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior as part of his keenness to build the national capacity in the area of search and rescue with a view to provide all aspects of assistance in the field of search and rescue operations in the friendly states in the event of disasters.
Major Mohammad Abdul Jaleel Al Anssari, Field Liaison Officer with UN and Regional Chairman of UNISRO for Europe, Africa and Middle East Sector stressed UAE's concern for strengthening its humanitarian role across the world to extend hands of assistance to victims of disasters.
Earlier last month, Lt. General Sheikh Saif had instructed the Abu Dhabi Police to offer logistical support to relief and rescue operations in floods-affected areas in Pakistan.
In March this year Sheikh Saif also directed that necessary procedures are to be taken in accordance with classification standards and accreditation by the UN's International Search and Rescue Organisation (UNISRO) in order to classify the Emirates Search and Rescue team as "Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Team" Under UN guidelines by the year 2013.
The UAE Urban Search and Rescue Team (UAE USAR) is part of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group, made up of more than 80 countries and organisations. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
