Abu Dhabi Traffic intensifies patrols to secure students' safety
Abu Dhabi, Sept 14, 2010 (WAM)- At the beginning of school year, the Abu Dhabi Police's Directorate of Traffic and Patrols has announced intensification of its traffic patrols with effect from Monday, at intersections, roads in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western region to ensure students' safety and protection against accidents.
The campaign is within the framework of the Police's strategy derived from the general plan of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to reduce accidents on roads under the slogan "Schools without Accidents".
Colonel Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of Directorate of Traffic and Patrols, has congratulated families, students and teaching staff on the start of the new school year, urging drivers to cooperate in order to create a safe environment "Without traffic accidents" through abiding by speed limits and slowing down when approaching schools.
Al Harthi has urged school bus drivers to park safely in order to give students enough time to sit down inside the bus. Drivers also must ensure that students are far enough from buses after leaving, before driving away.
Parents who transport their own male and female students must ensure that children below 10 are not seated on front seats, they should not be allowed to cross streets without supervision and should not stand in front of their schools so as not to impede traffic flow.
Police have drawn up an integrated traffic plan for the new school year to raise awareness about road and traffic safety among students, teaching staff and drivers. The plan consists of lectures, quizzes, visits and prizes to motivate all to participate and cooperate.
He said "Abu Dhabi Police pays great attention to schools and universities for their effective role in curbing traffic accidents as they will be the future drivers and road users. Therefore, they are responsible for spreading traffic awareness messages, through effective participation in following traffic rules in order to set an example for others".
He has urged school officials to ensure the mechanical safety of buses that transport students, in order to avoid mechanical breakdowns. Each bus should be provided with a supervisor (Male and female) to assist students in boarding and getting off buses safely. Students should not be allowed to leave the bus in the middle of the road, buses are not overloaded and that each student sits in a separate seat. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
