UAE trade with non-Arab Africa hits Dh204 billion

Dubai, Sept 19, 2010 (WAM)- The UAE’s foreign trade with six non-Arab African countries reached Dh204.14 billion in 2009 with South African witnessed huge drop in trade, according to statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Trade.
Though the value of trade between the UAE and African countries declined last year, the report projected increase in trade following recovery on global economy.
The six non-Arab countries are Angola, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa and Tanzania.
The UAE's total trade in 2009 climbed to an all-time high of nearly Dh1.778 trillion, maintaining its position as the second largest commercial centre in the Arab World after Saudi Arabia.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the value of trade between of the UAE and Angola declined last year to Dh1.297 billion compared to Dh3.115 billion in 2008. Imports were about Dh338.6 million compared to Dh1.999 billion and exports hit Dh174 million compared to Dh126.7 million.
With Kenya, the total trade rose to Dh2.106 billion in 2009 from Dh1.836 billion in 2008. The value of imports rose to Dh7.378 million, and re-exports to Dh1.528 billion compared to Dh852.5 million; while the value of exports fell to Dh199.2 million from 268.9 million.
UAE’s trade with Nigeria witnessed the biggest increase among the six nations, doubling to
Dh3.146 billion in 2009 from Dh1.574 billion in the previous year. Imports rose to Dh2.569 billion from Dh346.1 million and exports to Dh1.357 billion compared to Dh99 million; re-export rose to Dh1.219 billion from Dh1.128 billion.
Trade with Tanzania also rose sharply last year to reach Dh3.168 billion compared to Dh1.867 billion in 2008. Imports from Tanzania jumped to Dh1.589 billion from Dh671.2 million while re-exports hit Dh1.438 billion in 2009 against Dh1.013 billion in 2008, while exports fell to Dh141 million compared to Dh165 million.
Trade with South Africa recorded the biggest decline last year to Dh3.22 billion compared to Dh13.939 billion in 2008, a drop of 77 per cent.
Imports fell to Dh2.477 billion compared with Dh12.531 billion; exports dropped to Dh368.1 million from Dh395.7 million, and re-export to Dh38.4 million from Dh1 billion.
India became the UAE’s largest trade partner last year recording non-oil foreign trade of Dh63 billion.
