Public Works Minister inspects work on multi-billion Dirham East Coast infrastructure projects

Abu Dhabi, Oct 24, 2010 (WAM)- Minister of Public Works Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan has made an inspection tour of the road and infrastructure projects currently underway in the country's East Coast. The project's total cost is estimated at Dh2.09 billion.
Sheikh Hamdan began his tour with a visit to the site of the 16-kilometer Dubai-Fujairah highway which will serve a number of areas, including Shawka, Kadra and Siji.
Sheikh Hamdan, who chairs the executive committee for the development of remote area, said that work on the infrastructure projects, ordered by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, could be completed ahead of schedule. Other projects include the first and second phase of the dual carriageway Dibba - Masafi highway at an estimated cost of Dh560 million. The project's first phase is due for completion in October 2011.
"Bids will be invited soon for the project's second phase which will cost around Dh400 million. Once completed, the project will guarantee safe and smooth flow of traffic," Sheikh Hamdan said. Work is also well underway on the dual carriageway, 13-kilometer links between the express highway and the Emirates Ring Road, beginning from Falaj Al Mualla-Umm Al Qawain intersection.
The links will ease pressure on the intersection by diverting truck routes from Falaj Al Mualla-Umm Al Qawain intersection.
Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the importance of the flagship project to permanently eliminate congestion on the Sharjah-Dubai sector of the Emirates Road which stretches to the fringes of the emirate of Ajman.
The project, costing around Dh800 million and is aimed at finding solutions to the congestion, especially at the 5th zone at the Sharjah Industrial area.
Other infrastructure projects include construction of one dam in Sharam area and two in Al Bidya. The Dh40 million project will be completed within one year. A tender for another dam construction project, costing an estimated amount of Dh120 million, will be issued after one month.
Work is going on since August 2009 on a project to renovate 23 fishing wharfs in the northern emirates at a total cost of Dh130 million. The project entails construction of floating piers, jetties and berthing areas.
Sheikh Hamdan also revealed plans to award a contract for the Dh210 million Al Humaidiya bridge intersection, consisting of four crossings, two flyovers and a tunnel. The project also include construction of 70-kilomter paved roads.
He also indicated that construction works had already started on the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah, which is being implemented under a generous gesture by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The mosque's total area is 32,000 square meter.
The Dh200 million project is expected to be completed after two years. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
