ADACH announces the launch of the fourth session of the Dhafra Festival in December

Abu Dhabi, Nov 1, 2010 (WAM)- The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) will launch the fourth session of the Mazayina Dhafra Camel Festival on 16th - 25th of December 2010.
The Festival will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and will take place in Zayed City in Al Gharbia (the Western Region).
Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Director General of ADACH said that the Festival is an important occasion that assists in the revival of the deep-rooted heritage and traditions of the Arab World. It immortalises these traditions in the collective memory, and the generous sponsorship of the event by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is praised. This sponsorship is a key contributory factor to the success that the Festival has previously achieved. The purpose of the Festival is to maintain the heritage that is inherent to the local community, and pass it on to future generations.
Mazrouei, the Advisor for Culture and Heritage at the Court of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, said that "the Festival recalls the history and heritage of the region. It narrates stories from the past to the people and demonstrates the strong will and efforts that our forefathers made to safeguard our heritage, taking the completion of their objectives as a major responsibility. This is promised by the implementation of the ADACH strategy, embodying the vision of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to preserve our heritage and support its place in the renaissance and development of the country." Since the first session of the Festival in 2008 it has become a regional and global event that has attracted a huge media interest, both regionally and globally. Admiration has been expressed for the role that the Festival has played in safeguarding the heritage of Abu Dhabi.
During the last session of the Festival, more than 800 media outlets from over seventy countries worldwide provided comprehensive coverage of the event. It was covered in a wide range of languages in addition to Arabic, including English, French, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish, Romanian, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Korean, Persian and Indian.
The press praised the significant role that has been played by ADACH in its documentation of the link between the past and present. It has paired up interaction and dialogue with different cultures and civilisations, whilst simultaneously ensuring the preservation of the heritage of the UAE.
During the last session in February, more than 28,000 camels, owned by more than 1,200 people in the region, competed for prizes amounting to 42 million UAE dirhams (about 12 million US dollars). The race comprised of more than forty laps, and included a contest for Asayel (pure-bred) and Majahim (dark-skinned) local camels. This contest required that each participant must enter fifty camels, all competing for a first prize of one million UAE dirhams.
The Festival includes many other traditional events, such as the Hallab Competition (for the camel that produces the most milk) the date packaging competition, the Nabati poetry contest, the photography competition and the cooking contest. There are also various traditional activities dedicated to children and school students, as well as a Traditional Market which displays handicrafts from the UAE region. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
