Nahyan attends MoU signing between Zayed University and the University of Geneva
Abu Dhabi, Nov 10, 2010 (WAM)- Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan. Minister of Higher Education '&' Scientific Research, President of Zayed University, attended the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between Zayed University and the University of Geneva in Switzerland, for a period of 3 years.
The MoU, which was signed by Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim, Vice President of Zayed University, and Professor Yves Flueckiger, Vice-Rector of the University of Geneva, promotes joint cultural relations, scientific and educational cooperation in areas of mutual interest, in addition to collaboration in the fields of teaching and joint research activities, as well as the exchange of scholars, faculty members, and postgraduate and undergraduate student delegations. The signing ceremony was also witnessed by Pascal Couchepin, former President of Switzerland, Dr. Daniel Johnson, Provost of Zayed University, and several officials.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim, Vice President of Zayed University, explained that this initiative translates the university's strategy and keenness in strengthening areas of educational and scientific cooperation with various universities and higher education institutes around the world, in addition to providing the highest professional levels and standards of curricula and programs in all colleges and departments of the University, so as they surpass their counterparts in prestigious universities around the world, as well as meet the needs of the UAE's labour market.
Dr. Al Jassim added that according to the MoU, both universities will work on specific partnership projects in several fields, which include organising a joint Geneva- Zayed conference on aspects of international law and international relations, in addition to establishing a Geneva-Zayed Research Facility on Zayed University's Abu Dhabi campus to allow a focus for joint research activities for staff and students of both universities. In addition, both universities will collaborate in areas of the fine arts and popular culture in the Middle East, as well as exchange of faculty specialised in sustainability and the development of energy studies.
Commenting on the new partnership between the two universities, Professor Yves Flueckiger, Vice-Rector of the University of Geneva, commended the joint collaboration with Zayed University which has become the leading university in the region. Prof. Flueckiger explained that the cooperation with Zayed University will also yield the establishment of the Zayed Geneva Centre at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, which will attract students and researchers for joint research activities; to develop common projects linked to Geneva and International Organisations; and to develop the knowledge of Arab culture and language. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
