Hamdan bin Zayed hails UNESCO decision to register falconry as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Abu Dhabi, Nov 22, 2010 (WAM)- Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the Emirates Falconers' Club HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan hailed the efforts of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to preserve heritage and pass it to the coming generations. He also lauded the support of Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and General HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces for the efforts for preserving the country's rich heritage.
Sheikh Hamdan added that it was these efforts and support that helped UAE in succeeding to make UNESCO register falconry as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity last week. An UNESCO experts' committee unanimously approved the registration of falconry as a live human heritage.
The move was the culmination of efforts made by the UAE in cooperation with 11 Arab and foreign countries.
The announcement came during the meetings of the Intergovernmental Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Unesco, in Nairobi Nov 15-19.
The UAE delegation to the meeting was led by Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, the advisor for culture and heritage at the court of the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and director general of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH).
Sheikh Hamdan said that the falconry, which appeared in Asia before 7000 years is not just a sport but is part and parcel of the cultural identity and heritage of the Gulf region. Falconry has been practiced over the centuries in harmony with nature and ethics carried over as legacy of former generations. This ensured the sustainability of bio species and their preservation. He emphasised that human records, excavations and ancient texts prove that the sport of falconry has emerged with the advent of civilisation and was known in the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf region since 4000 years.
The sport then spread throughout the Muslim world and then spread to Europe and North America as one of the noblest hunting hobbies known throughout history. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
