Al Attiyah thanks GCC leaders
Abu Dhabi, Dec 7, 2010 (WAM) - Gulf Cooperation Council's Secretary General Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Attiyah has offered thanks to the GCC leaders for their continuous support during his tenure.
Addressing the opening session of the 31st GCC summit in Abu Dhabi last night, Al Attiyah said he was pleased that Abu Dhabi is hosting the summit under the chairmanship of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan "who spared no effort in lending his wisdom to the Council.
"The GCC could have not been established without the care and support of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers the leaders who pioneered that great entity," he added.
Al Attiyah said that his tenure as a Secretary General saw numerous achievements, including the customs union in 2003, the GCC common market in 2008, and the monetary union in 2010, in addition to the establishment of standardisation authority in 2002, approval of the unified anti-dumping system in 2003 and approval of the unified commercial policy and financial markets integration in 2005.
He underlined the launch of GCC-wide power grid in 2009 and the ongoing studies to set up a GCC railway link, expected to be completed by 2017. He also referred to the studies being conducted on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Al Attiyah also spoke about the achievements made in the fields of education, youth, satellite channels, environment, sustainable development, military '&' defence and security cooperation. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
