World Diabetes Bus continues activities in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, Dec 26, 2010 (WAM)- -The world diabetes tour bus continues its activities in Abu Dhabi as part of its research program about diabetes rates in the UAE.
The bus started its activities in Abu Dhabi last Tuesday and is expected to examine 1000 people till 3rd January. Hence the numbers of medical examinations made in Sharjah and Dubai reached 1500 people. It will then continue the program in all the other Gulf countries.
The bus was visited by Her Royal Highness Princess Benedict, Queen Denmark's Sister, and Emeritus President of Olaf Baiden Powell Association during the opening ceremony led by Dr. Hanif Hassan Ali Al Qassim, UAE Minister of Health in Dubai. In addition, Prince Fredrick, Crown Prince of Denmark also visited the bus during the MENA Diabetes Forum.
The world diabetes bus began its activities in the UAE last November for the first time in the Gulf region in cooperation with NovoNordisk. The bus set up a tent to diagnose diabetes and examine visitors' blood sugar rate, provided educational awareness information, made blood tests and necessary procedures for examining suspected diabetes cases.
Dr. Mahmoud Fikri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Policies at the Ministry of Health and Chairman of the Diabetes National Higher Committee stated that the Ministry of Health formed a team comprising 10 nurses for checkups and doctors for medical supervision pointing out that the tour's official working hours will be from 5 pm to 9 pm during the week.
A questionnaire is distributed to the tent's visitors in order to get acquainted to the individuals' sports and nutritious behaviours, smoking habits and other information that would help in identifying the major case of diabetes dissemination. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
