M'SIAN PM INITIATES MOVE TO DISCERN PROGRESS OF AGRI SECTOR
SERDANG (Malaysia), Aug 12 (Bernama) - Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Tuesday that he has asked the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) not to categorise the agriculture sector under commodities so as to enable the government discern the progress the sector has made as a result of its supportive measures.
He said many agricultural plants and factories had been placed under the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities and "we are not able to see the extent of progress in fields unrelated to oil palm and rubber".
"I want to see what the farmers, fishermen and livestock breeders contribute to our economy with the development of their economic activities with the support and aid given by the government," he said when opening the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition 2008 (MAHA 2008), in Serdang, a large developing town in southern state of Selangor , Malaysia, close to the outskirt of Kuala Lumpur.
Abdullah said it had been said that the agriculture sector cannot be progressive, and added that this was not good for agriculture and those involved in the sector.
He said various measures had been taken to enable the agriculture sector to progress quickly to ensure adequate supply of food in the country.
Abdullah said he had put forward several proposals on ways to overcome food crisis problems, at the July meeting in Kuala Lumpur of the Group of Eight Islamic Developing Countries (D-8).
These included setting up huge granaries to help overcome a food shortage in the event of natural disasters such as floods.
"We want the country to have an abundance of good seeds to help farmers grow crops and help them to get seeds in the event of disasters such as floods so as to replant their farms," he said.
He also said a large-scale project to produce quality fertiliser would be established to help overcome the problem of costly fertiliser.
Abdullah said he was happy that the agriculture sector had shown a certain degree of growth with the implementation of various measures and the additional financial allocations.
He said there was an increase of more than 10 per cent in the cultivation of vegetables and breeding of cattle and goats, and a 21 per cent rise of exports in the agriculture sector -- from RM11 billion (US$1=RM3.33) worth in 2006 to RM14 billion last year.
