Join UAE's battle against plastic bags
Abu Dhabi, Jan 11, 2011 (WAM)- The harm that plastic bags do to the environment will be with us for hundreds of years, thousands by some estimates. Some kinds of bags take well over 400 years to biodegrade, others much longer. During this time they will kill marine and land animals that mistake them for food and be an eyesore to the natural environment, commented a UAE daily.
Hundred of billions of plastic bags are used each year and their manufacture produces the carbon emissions responsible for global warming, among other threats to the environment.
"So it is good news for the earth that the UAE is reportedly on schedule to be free from plastic bags by 2013. However, much work must still be done by the government, companies and consumers to make sure the country succeeds in this goal", said Gulf News in its editorial published yesterday.
And sadly, until the rest of the world is also free from plastic bags, the UAE will continue to find them on its shores for many years after that, the paper added. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
