ETIHAD TO FLY TO MELBOURNE STARTING MARCH 2009
DUBAI, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- While other airlines are cutting back on routes due to fluctuating fuel prices, Etihad Airways is set to begin non-stop daily services from its Abu Dhabi home-base to Melbourne, from March 2009.
Melbourne, will be the third Australian destination served by Etihad after Sydney and Brisbane.
The national airline of the United Arab Emirates is eager to expand its operations in Australia following the successful launch of services to Sydney and Brisbane in 2007, said Etihad's chief executive officer, James Hogan.
"I hope the new Melbourne flight will also prove to be a winner for both commercial and leisure travellers alike," he added in a statement.
Within its first year of Australian operations, Etihad Airways tripled its flights to and from Australia, carrying more than 100,000 passengers.
Etihad recently announced it was ordering 100 new Airbus and Boeing wide and narrow-bodied aircraft at list prices of US$22 billion, for delivery between 2011 and 2020.
Etihad aims to carry six million passengers by the end of 2008 and increase to 50 the number of destinations on its growing global network.
