Emirati project will be launched in Pakistan today

Abu Dhabi, Jan 12, 2011 (WAM) - Upon the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Emirati project will be launched in Islamabad today aimed at helping Pakistan.
The Project will focus on four areas which are education, public health, roads and bridges.
A number of ministers in the government of Pakistan and the military officials will be present on the occasion.
The project comes within the framework of the good efforts by the UAE to help Arab and Islamic countries as UAE is considered one of the leading donor bodies in the field of humanitarian aid and international development around the world.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan maintain long-standing and close friendly relations since the founding of UAE by late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. And, it has been an integral part of the UAE's leadership's vision to support Pakistan. UAE does not only provide support to Pakistan in the times of crises i.e. natural calamities, earthquakes and floods but also work towards achieving Pakistan's comprehensive security, stability, economic progress and prosperity.
An in-depth study demonstrates UAE's unwavering commitment in supporting the efforts to promote stability in Pakistan and help achieve its comprehensive development by enabling the country to face natural disasters and humanitarian crises is one of the major pillars of the UAE's foreign policy. In line with a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries UAE will execute a comprehensive development plan costing an estimated amount of US$100 million (Dh367 million) to create job opportunities in flood hit areas of Pakistan.
UAE has become one of the founding members of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) group due to its leading role among the countries providing assistance to Pakistan. The group was launched on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in September 2008 in New York as a forum for policy dialogue with Pakistan to address security and economic challenges and to mobilise support.
FoDP is aimed at extending support to the democratic government of Pakistan in its efforts to consolidate democracy, social uplift and economic development in the country. The initial meeting was Co-chaired by United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. The other founding member states of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan included Britain, France, Germany, the United States, China, Canada, Turkey, Australia and Italy plus the United Nations and the European Union.
Other countries and organisations, such as United Nations, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development joined the group at the Expert Level meeting which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi in April, 2009.
Today, the UAE is a major donor in the development of Pakistan and is playing an active part in international meetings aimed at mobilising assistance to Pakistan and maximise the benefits. The most recent such meeting by United Nations General Assembly last October discussed further efforts to help flood-ravaged Pakistan.
Last May, UAE Foreign Minister, H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, visited Islamabad to sign an agreement for the construction of `Sheikh Khalifa City, Balakot' in the Mansehra district for the population displaced by the 2005 deadly earthquake. The UAE has committed Dh12 million in funds for the project.
UAE-funded Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Hospital in Muzaffarabad is built to improve the quality of life of the local community and has been handed over to Pakistanis last June. The UAE has also provided aid and support to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were forced out by the fierce fighting between Pakistani forces and Taliban militants.
Last year UAE hosted Expert Level meeting of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) which discussed ways to assist Pakistani government's development efforts. Also in April 2009 at the Pakistan Donors Conference held in Tokyo, UAE pledged US$300 million of aid to Pakistan over a period of two year. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
