UAE and Syria signs MoUs for consumer protection, export development

Damascus - Jan 16, 2011 (WAM) - UAE and Syria signed on Thursday two memoranda of understanding, each for consumer protection and export development. The MoUs were signed at the end of the Emirati-Syrian Joint Ministerial Committee meetings in Damascus.
The first MoU was signed between the Ministries of Economy in both countries, while the second MoU was signed between the Export Development and Promotion Agency in Syria and the UAE Ministry of Economy.
Both sides also signed with initials an agreement for joint cooperation in the field of customs. Dubai Customs Director General had headed the UAE side in the meetings of customs negotiations team set up by the Emirati Syrian Joint Ministerial Committee.
UAE Economy Minister Sultan Bin Saeed al-Mansouri and the Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad al-Hussein also signed the minutes of the Joint Ministerial Committee meetings held in the Syrian capital.
The meeting also discussed in detail, means of opening new avenues to boost bilateral cooperation in various economic, trade, investment and cultural fields.
Both sides stressed commitment to continue granting Certificates of Origin adopted by the Arab Economic and Social Council to the Arab nationally-produced commodities and overcome all obstacles to the trade exchange between Syria and the UAE.
They also agreed on holding a Syrian investment forum in the spring of 2011 in the UAE with the aim to introduce and promote the investment opportunities available in Syria, as well as activating the joint economic and trade committee and the agreements signed between both countries in various domains.
The meetings of 6th session of the Syrian-UAE Joint Committee were agreed upon to be held in Abu Dhabi during 2012.
During meetings with media, UAE Economy Minister Sultan Bin Saeed al-Mansouri pointed out that what distinguished the current session of the Committee was the new proposals that were laid on the table on its future approach to deal with the raised items.
"We got so many difficult pending issues accomplished," said al-Mansouri, noting that more that 25 MoUs and agreements are signed so far between the two countries.
The meetings emphasised the importance of the role played by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of both countries in the development of trade and investment and agreed to continue the ongoing communication and coordination in the organisation of meetings between officials of chambers of commerce in the two countries to achieve these goals.
The meeting also noted the importance of the launch of the UAE-Syrian Business Council recently and the results of the Economic Business Forum, which was held in Damascus.
The meeting also discussed cooperation in the fields of finance, banking and customs, agriculture, specifications and standards, transport, communications and information technology.
The two sides stressed the importance of activating agreements signed between the two sides to strengthen media cooperation as well as activating the executive program for cultural cooperation agreement and scientific cooperation between the ministries of higher education in both countries.
Al Mansouri said in a statement after his meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Naji Otari that the meetings focused on the evaluation of some previous recommendations, at the same time putting forward a bunch of new ideas, in the light of the economic changes that took place in the world. He added that the discussions also focussed on enhancement of cooperation between UAE and Syria in the fields of commercial, industrial, agricultural, technical and knowledge-based economy.
Al Mansouri added that during the talks the Syrian President as well as Syrian Prime Minister spelt out Syria's keenness and desire to focus on the practical side of the bilateral relations with the private sector participation in future meetings, as well as on investment and the government sector. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
