National Drilling Company expands operations whilst maintaining high environmental and sustainability standards

Abu Dhabi, Jan 18, 2011 (WAM) - National Drilling Company (NDC) attaches significant importance to its operations and policies in respect to the Environment, and in ways that are mutually advantageous to the company and to society. Thus it works continuously on integrating all environmental aspects into its mainstream operations to maximise the efficiency and productivity of its resources and minimise practices that might adversely affect, the Environment the local communities and the society at large.
Being the sole drilling contractor providing the oil and gas well drilling services in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, and in order to meet customer requirements, the company plans to expand the current rig fleet of 28 rigs to around 50 in the next 3-5 years. In doing this, NDC assigns considerable importance to the environmental provisions. Hence each rig will be built in accordance with stringent environmental, nautical and aviation regulations, designed to accommodate current and future environmental and regulatory developments.
NDC Chief Executive Officer Abdulla Saeed Al Suwaidi said, "we believe that corporate organisations are subsystems of the larger society; they should therefore fulfil their social responsibilities by ensuring that their activities cause minimal harm to societies and the environment in which they operate". In this perspective, NDC' rig Junana was chosen for the Zero Discharge project. The Zero Discharge design is intended to make jack-up drilling rigs as environmentally clean as possible, through enhancement of the collection of effluent streams and preventing discharge of any kind to the sea thus making the rig more environmentally acceptable. In addition the rig staff was trained on safe handling of released effluent '&' cuttings.
The project "Zero Spill" won the special recognition award in the ADNOC HSE Award competition in 2009.
In addition, National Drilling Company recently celebrated an important milestone in its history as Onshore rig ND-17 achieved an outstanding record of fifteen years LTI (Lost Time Incident) free operations.
Chief Executive Officer Abdulla Saeed Al Suwaidi said, "Rig ND-17 has successfully worked more than 6 million man-hours without a Lost Time Incident. It is a milestone in the history of our Drilling Business, and demonstrates the company's dedication to behave professionally, responsibly while contributing to economic development, improving the quality of life of the work-force and their families as well as the local community.
Suwaidi explained that as per International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) records, only 12 rigs worldwide have achieved more than 12 years without LTI and NDC hold the 5th position amongst these 12 rigs.
He elaborated that based on NDC commitment to realise the best international standards in HSE, the company insists that all staff fully participate in related systems implementation and awareness campaigns; to act on their empowerment to stop any unsafe act or condition that may affect the environment in the workplace or in the surrounding society. This policy is consistent with ADNOC vision of excellence in HSE, and in line with its directives to apply the industry best practices and comply with the highest international standards.
To do that, Abdulla Saeed Al Suwaidi added, the company organises a variety of activities, especially training, to help employees understand the environmental impact of their jobs and to support their efforts to make positive changes thus becoming more environmentally responsible throughout their daily lives, and helping them build a true environmental ethic. Besides education, NDC provides incentives, rewards and recognition programs for employees who demonstrate their environmental commitment.
Moreover, to further boost its contribution to sustainability, NDC integrates state-of-the-art technologies with advanced drilling techniques in order to optimise production, reduce costs and enhance environmental protection. One example of that is the Directional drilling service provided by the company to its clients. This technique allows several wells to be drilled at varying angles from a central location. This dramatically decreases the amount of land surface area required to develop an oilfield, making it possible to place the well in the least environmentally-sensitive location and still reach a reservoir that may be miles away laterally.
To help safeguard the groundwater reserves of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, NDC has partnered with the US Geological Survey to form the Ground Water Research Program, providing valuable research on groundwater resources and the hydrology of the Emirate. Since the inception of the project in 1988, Program scientists have developed a comprehensive groundwater database, assessed and mapped the resources of the Emirate, and produced over 200 scientific publications. NDC has drilled over 350 research wells, NDC CEO added.
Likewise, and in keeping with the highest traditions for excellence, NDC has in place a dedicated division for Asset Integrity. The purpose of the division is to ensure that the HSE critical structures, equipment and systems of the assets owned and operated are suitable for their required functions and are maintained in a condition that these continue to perform without any risk to personnel or environment.
The CEO highlighted that the special prominence NDC gives to environment conservation in both offshore and onshore locations made the company internationally recognised for its safety standards, and this obligation translated into winning many awards in different categories such as Safety and Innovation.
In addition to receiving the Special Recognition Award in the prestigious ADNOC Annual HSE 2009 Award in the Environment category, NDC has won the Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award (SKEA) 2007 in the Services Sector, and in June 2010, ISO14001-2004 NDC was recertified for another 3 years, reflecting NDC commitment and dedication towards protection of the environment. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
