Lubna Al Qasimi discusses cooperation with Finnish counterpart

Abu Dhabi, Jan 18, 2011 (WAM) - Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade and Dr. Paavo Vayrynen, Finnish Minister of Foreign Trade have discussed ways and possibilities of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields especially in trade and investment.
During a meeting held in Abu Dhabi on Monday, they also discussed means of developing bilateral cooperation in the areas of renewable energy and modern technology and the promotion of meetings between the business community to take advantage of the opportunities which exist in the economy of the two countries.
The two sides hailed the pace of convergence that bilateral relations witnessed in recent times, which contributed to the promotion of economic and trade cooperation and investment between the two countries.
Sheikha Lubna confirmed the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the areas of technology related to advanced industries, including renewable energy referring to the State's keenness to attract the latest technology and equipment in various areas, including renewable energy.
She also stated that Finland has been a staunch advocate of closer ties between the EU and core partners such as the Middle East. The UAE is proud to say that we remain Finland's top partner in the region, with total trade between our countries reaching AED 804.43 million for the first 8 months of 2010. The Emirates is mainly drawn to Finland's high quality mobile phone, telecommunications and cable and machinery products.
Another significant development is the signing of a contract between the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and a Finnish educational expert organisation to implement the Finnish education system model in two local public schools.
These are just some of the areas from which we can take our partnerships to the next level, and with the presence of around 45 Finnish companies in the UAE we expect significant gain across various industries in the next few years, she added.
For his part, the Finnish minister expressed his country's keenness to develop bilateral cooperation particularly in the fields of trade with the UAE because of its important role in economic development and the renewable energy sector and global trade.
He explained that the investment opportunities existing in the two countries opens the door to broader cooperation between the private sector, investors and businessmen to contribute to the promotion of trade and economic cooperation between the UAE and Finland.
The meeting was attended by a number of senior officials and the accompanying delegation of the Finnish Minister.- Emirates News Agency, WAM
