Portugal seeks a Masdar-style clean energy: Portuguese Prime Minister

Abu Dhabi, Jan 18, 2011 (WAM) - Portugal expressed its interest to develop a UAE-style clean energy.
''Energy efficiency and smart grids are research and value creation clusters of great importance. Portugal is already at the forefront of research related with smarter systems for the electric grid management,'' Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Amado said yesterday.
''We have the ambition that more than 50% of Portuguese consumers will be served by smart grids by 2020. But we want to go further. Our goal must be to develop smart cities, as you are doing here in Masdar and as we are also doing in Evora, a historical town in Southern Portugal. This is where everything gets together:
i) decentralised production of renewable energy;
ii) ii) energy efficiency;
iii) iii) electric mobility and
iv) iv) smart grids,'' he said in his speech at the opening session of the World Future Energy Summit.
''My Government and the Portuguese companies in the energy sector are very willing to cooperate with foreign countries and enterprises to develop a sustainable energy sector worldwide. I am here to underline this willingness.
This summit, he added, would encourage informed discussion and exchanges between governments and companies in order to create, all together, the cities of the future. This is the best way to create a better world, with sustainable environment, and better economy.
''Energy is increasingly becoming an absolutely strategic resource for any economy. Energy is key to fight climate change but is also an economic growth factor, inducing the creation of wealth and employment. Portugal is now recognised as a world leader in the energy sector. This is a result of the investments that were made in the last six years: 1. In Renewable Energy 2. In Electric Mobility, and 3. In Energy efficiency and smart grids.
''The Portuguese goal for 2020 is to produce 60% of all electricity and 31% of the primary energy from renewable sources. This is one of the most ambitious goals in Europe and worldwide. In Portugal, we already have one of the biggest photovoltaic solar plants in the world, with 45 mega watts capacity.
On Electric Mobility, he explained: Portugal is the first country in the world to have a smart charging network for electric vehicles at a national scale. By the end of the first semester of 2011, more than one thousand three hundred (1,300) normal charging points and fifty (50) quick charging points will be operational all around the country.
''In 2020 we expect 10% of all cars in Portugal to be electric. In a few months every member of my Government will be using electric cars for urban mobility," he indicated. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
