School kids to be aware of UXO menace

VIENTIANE,JAN 18.(KPL)- Department of Primary and Pre-School Education, Ministry of Education, inked an agreement with World Education in Laos on UXO Education and Awareness Programme aimed at nine UXO affected provinces.
Signatories to the document were Deputy Director of Primary and Pre-school Education Department Mr. Somboune Masouvanh and Country Director of World Education in Laos Mr. Mark Gorman.
With the support of the United States of America’s Department of State, this programme will be implemented for 18 months in provinces of Houaphanh, Xiengkhouang, Luang Prabang, Khammouane, Savannakhet, Champassak, Saravane, Sekong and Attapeu to reduce the impact and accidents of unexploded ordnance on school kids, their families and communities through promoting education on UXO danger and preventive measures.
This primary school education program is being implemented in the most heavily UXO impacted provinces in the country, according to Mr. Mark. “It is making difference-saving lives and educating thousands of school children on how to avoid accidents from UXOs. Further, it is important to note that this programme addresses the new Lao Millennium Development Goal 9 which is to provide enhanced assistance to UXO clearance, survivor assistance and risk education,” said Mr. Mark.
Since the inception of this programme in 1996, over 200,000 primary school students have received UXO education and awareness instruction in 1,800 primary schools and over Lao 6,000 teachers have received instruction and teaching materials on how to use the UXO curriculum. “We are all too familiar with the sad fact that on average six days out of seven someone in Laos will be injured or killed by a UXO and half of these victims are children. But we can take a measure of hope that our efforts are making a difference. For example, through teachers’ logs we know that students who have received UXO education are reporting making safe decisions about UXO munitions,” said Mr. Mark.
There is evidence that shows students have evolved as important change agents instructing their families and communities about ways to avoid death and injury from UXOs, according to the World Education Country Director.
