"GIFT" FOR MALAYSIANS IN 2009 BUDGET, SAYS DPM

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said the government would announce a 'pleasant surprise' for Malaysians when the 2009 Budget is tabled on Aug 29.

"There's a pleasant surprise for the people. We understand that the people are hard-pressed by the current situation. The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is concerned about the people's problems," he said when launching the BN Election Machinery for the Permatang Pauh Parliamentary constituency, hereWednesday night.

He said the government was considering an appropriate mechanism to ease theburden of the people following the rise in fuel price.

As such, Najib, who is also BN deputy chairman, hoped that the people would not be influenced by the promises made by the opposition to reduce the fuelprice if they ruled the country.

"The whole world is experiencing the fuel price hike, so it's not logical if we were to reduce the fuel price using profits made by Petronas," hesaid.

On the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election, Najib described the intention of opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Anwar Ibrahim toform a new federal government as unrealistic.

"Can he (Anwar) form the (federal) government merely by winning in Permatang Pauh. He can't form the government just by winning in PermatangPauh.

"He can only form the (federal) government if 30 BN members of Parliament crossed over to the party that he leads, that is the Pakatan Rakyat," hesaid.

At the launch, Najib also announced the State Assemblyman for Seberang Jaya Ariff Shah Omar Shah as the BN candidate for the Permatang Pauhparliamentary by-election on Aug 26.

Najib said it was not impossible for a political change to take place inPermatang Pauh based on the ever changing political situation.

"In 2004 it (the pendulum) moved to the right and we won handsomely, in 2008, unfortunately, it moved to the left, and we fell, including the Pearl ofthe Orient," he said.

The by-election is being held following the resignation of the incumbent Permatang Pauh member of parliament, who is also PKR president, Dr Wan AzizahWan Ismail, to make way for her husband, Anwar, to contest.
