Abu Dhabi concludes 16th Terry Fox Annual Run
Abu Dhabi, Feb 20, 2011 (WAM) - Under the patronage of Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Advisor to His Highness the President of the UAE, the 16th annual Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run was held this morning.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan presented Professor Mohammed Yousef Bani Yas, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Vice provost Medical Sciences at UAE University with a grant of Dh300,000.
This will go towards the three Abu Dhabi-supported cancer research projects currently being led in Al Ain by Professor Sehamuddin Galadari, Professor Tahir Rizvi and Dr. Maria Cabezudo. The grant money is a result of the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Runs' fundraising and is the third and final instalment to be presented to those researchers. Money raised from the terry fox run in the UAE over the years went towards financing 35 projects at a value of AED7,726,608 .
In a kind gesture, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdullah Al Nahyan, son of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, along with his sister Sheikha Fatima Bint Abdullah Bin Al Nahyan and his brother Sheikh Zayed Bin Abdullah Al Nahyan, presented a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation during the event.
The programme for the run started at 7:00 am and participants were greeted with motivating music from the Terry Fox Run DJ, followed by a 15 minute aerobic warm-up session. Aside from the main event, there were several other entertaining activities throughout the programme including music by the 40 member Abu Dhabi Police Band and the Bohra Community Drumming Band, each of which provided entertainment at the halfway point on the 8.5km route.
In this year's edition of the race, the energy levels were unprecedented. The participants continued arriving throughout the course of the day whether to participate in the run, or to make donations at the starting point. The impressive turn-up rate this year has added to the on-going success legacy of the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run.
The very first Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run was held in 1995, and a Run has been organised annually ever since, making this the 16th consecutive year. All proceeds go to fund innovative cancer research in the UAE. The Run is volunteer-driven; it is organised by an international mix of volunteers in the months prior to each Run, while the Run Day itself is supported by hundreds of volunteers of all ages taking on a number of duties to ensure that participants enjoy the day responsibly. Over 300 volunteers have supported this year's Run, including students and professionals, as well as members from the Emirates Foundation's ‘Takatof' programme and the philanthropic ‘Volunteer in Abu Dhabi' group.
The run was not only a philanthropic cancer research driven initiative, it also proved to be a medium for many other worthy causes which convened at the same event. The event attracted large numbers which in turn brought greater awareness to other causes such as special needs, the disabled and other humanitarian causes. This year the Terry Fox Run decided to turn green as they worked solidly with waste management companies to clean up the route of the run after the event. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
