UAE-Italy military cooperation getting stronger: Italy's Defence Minister
Abu Dhabi, Feb 23, 2011 (WAM) - The relations between Italy and UAE are tight and friendly and find a perfect match in increasingly strong and well-structured ties in the field of military cooperation, Minister of Defence of Italy, Ignazio La Russa, has said.
''The recently signed bilateral MoU regarding the cooperation in the defence field provides the proper institutional frame to put full into effect a wide range of opportunities, which will produce mutual and long-lasting benefits to the two countries,'' he told WAM on the occasion of IDEX 2011.
''Important initiatives have been already started; both at military and industrial level, and many others will follows soon. The presence at IDEX 2011 of Italian Government, that I represent here, has also and above all the purpose to speed up, acting in concert with the UAE Authorities, this process.
In consideration of the importance Italy attributes to the UAE and to their key role in the Gulf area, he added IDEX has become a traditional date in Italian defence agenda. The wide and qualified attendance by numerous Italian companies to this edition too is the tangible proof of the interest that the Italian Government and our defence industry demonstrates for this event, a prestigious "parterre" for giving visibility to the advanced technologies and industrial capabilities that my Country is able to offer as a contribution to the security of our current and future Partners.
''In my view, the potential of cooperation with all these actors is huge. Italy has a well-structured defence industry, capable of providing state-of-the-art technical solutions to the most various and complex defence needs. In addition, Italy is also among those countries most committed world-wide to provide their Armed Forces for operations aimed at supporting the global security. This has enabled us to mature a large on-field operational experience that we can and we wish to share with our Partners in order to contribute to their security and, as far as the industrial dimension is concerned, to their technological enhancement.
According to him, Italy is a country that has invested and keeps investing a lot in maintaining high standards of innovation, quality and performance in those fields where we own recognised excellences in the world. Defence is one of these fields, as testified by the presence of Italian world-class industrial players in nearly all the technological areas, from space to aeronautics, from shipbuilding to missile systems, from electronic warfare to sensors, from command and control to armoured vehicles. These leaders are flanked by the value added coming from a qualified supply chain, which has in the entrepreneurial dynamism and creativity of the small-medium enterprises a distinguishing mark of the "made in Italy".
''Data related to 2010 are not yet official. However, as a reference, it can be helpful to highlight that in 2009 the Italian Government has authorised the export of around seven billion Euros of defence material, he disclosed. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
