Emiratis set for Antarctic expedition with Robert Swan

Abu Dhabi, Feb 28, 2011 (WAM) - Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, is sending two UAE national members of staff to the Antarctic to take part in an expedition led by renowned polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan.
The International Antarctic Expedition 2011 will take place in March and the Etihad Ambassadors, Ali Al Shamsi, General Manager of Abu Dhabi Hub, and Taryam Al Subaihi, Corporate Communications Manager, will be part of the group of 65 people hand-picked from 25 nations.
They will explore the Antarctic Peninsula with on-board experts and gain firsthand knowledge of the continent's fragile ecosystem, experience its unique wildlife and observe the magnificent landscape of Antarctica, all while learning about climate change and what can be done to protect the last great wilderness on earth.
The expedition is part of the 2041 project which introduces people from across the world to Antarctica and is named after that date when commercial exploration of the region could begin, if the 1959 Antarctic Treaty System is not renewed.
Robert Swan and the 2041 team will lead an international group of corporate leaders, environmentalists, entrepreneurs, teachers and young people on a journey through the Antarctic Peninsula, visiting incredible locations and sharing his insights and personal experiences of this unique continent along the way. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
