GCC anti-human trafficking forum recommends to adopt UAE initiative to protect victims

Abu Dhabi, March 10, 2011 (WAM) - The first GCC anti-human trafficking forum organised by the Human Rights Administration at the General Secretariat of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior has hailed the UAE experience of setting up asylums for protecting the victims of human trafficking and repatriating them to their countries of origin.
The Forum which concluded here yesterday also recommended to adopt this model in other member states in the GCC.
The Forum also recommended to set up a joint committee consisting of relevant bodies to prepare a preventive strategy to combat the transnational crime of human trafficking and to protect its victims.
The forum also recommended to consider modernising and developing the Abu Dhabi Declaration 2006 in this regard into a law allowing it to go hand in hand with the current developments as well as regional and international work.
The closing ceremony was attended by Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Assistant Undersecretary for Resources and Support Services of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Hamid Mohammed Al Hadidi, Director General of Sharjah Police and a large number of officials.
The two-day meeting highlighted efforts of local, regional and international law enforcement agencies in combating crimes of human trafficking through different proactive and preventive methods and techniques.
An elite line-up of speakers and experts from police forces, ministries of interior and justice, the UAE National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT), Emirates Institute for Naturalisation and Residency and Ewa Shelters had presented working papers.
Representatives from the UN, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Interpol, Europol, EU,US and UK also gave valuable insights. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
