Emirates Foundation leases Paris Artists' Studio apartment to support UAE National talent

Abu Dhabi, March 20, 2011 (WAM) - The Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy has announced that selected Emirati artists will be offered an unprecedented opportunity to develop their creative techniques in Paris. The Foundation has taken up a 49-year lease (until the year 2060) on a fully-equipped artists' studio apartment in the prestigious "Cit Internationale des Arts" - the well-known artistic community in central Paris. Here, artists selected by the Foundation's Arts '&' Culture Programme will work alongside institutions and artists from some 50 countries across the world which hold similar long term studio leases in Paris.
Details were given to the international media at the "Art Dubai 2011" event by the Head of the Arts '&' Culture Programme at the Foundation, Salwa Mikdadi.
She stated: "The UAE will join other Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar to offer national artists a special opportunity to live and work in Paris." She added that the purpose of this long-term commitment will be to offer residencies of between three and six months for established Emirati artists working in visual arts, to help them develop new work in an inspiring and creative environment.
Since its opening in 1957, the Cit Internationale des Arts has accommodated more than 18,000 artists from all over the world - and has established itself as a leading international community for artists to develop their creativity.
Ms Mikdadi explained that the first artists would be chosen by a panel of advisors, following a careful selection procedure, for summer 2011. Application forms are available on the Foundation's website, http://www.emiratesfoundation.ae as of today. Artists chosen for a Paris residency will be provided with furnished accommodation and working facilities, as well as financial support to cover travel and subsistence. The residence also houses an exhibition area where artists can display their works and share experiences with other residing artists.
This new initiative is part of a successful residencies, internship and workshop grants programme by the Emirates Foundation - which has sponsored and guided Emiratis to take part in similar international and regional opportunities - sharing their work and advancing their talents. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
