Opening of Jersey Finance office in Abu Dhabi will usher new era of friendship with UAE, Senator Philip Ozouf

Abu Dhabi, March 22, 2010 (WAM) - The opening of an office in Abu Dhabi for Jersey Finance, the representative body for the finance industry of the British Channel Island of Jersey, will prove to be the foundation stone of a much deeper, stronger and diversified partnership" between UAE and Jersey in the years ahead, the island's Deputy Chief Minister and Treasury Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, said last night.
He was speaking at a reception attended by Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, and hosted by British Ambassador Dominic Jermey here at British Embassy. The office will cover the GCC and India, and is designed to promote wider recognition of services offered by Jersey's finance industry and to develop relations with local finance industries in the United Arab Emirates and the wider region.
In his speech, Ozouf said: "Over the years, the links between our financial institutions have expanded dramatically and the opening of the Jersey office will mark the beginning of even deeper ties".
"We have given great consideration as to how we further develop our links with the UAE and are very pleased with our decision to open our office in Abu Dhabi - the capital of the UAE and one of the world's fastest growing cities, this office will serve as a hub for our business with GCC countries and the Indian sub-continent".
He added: "In terms of our finance sectors, there is much that we share with the UAE. Both our Governments are committed to excellence in terms of meeting international standards of compliance and regulation. We in Jersey are proud to host Emirates NBD and HSBC Middle East - the UAE's largest foreign bank".
The National Bank of Abu Dhabi also has a managed trust fund in the island and a number of Jersey-based specialist finance firms have established offices here. "We both have a desire to develop an effective Sharia-compliant financial sector. We can, I hope, work together in these and other fields in the years ahead. There are other areas too, where I believe there is significant scope to expand our relationships", remarked Senator Philip Ozouf.
Jersey-based scientists and conservationists have played a considerable role in studies of the UAE's environment. Long may that continue. Emirati businessmen have invested in some of our largest companies.
Our educational institutions now offer specialised courses in finance that may be of assistance to UAE organisations and we would like to see Emirati students enjoying the benefits of our facilities.
Many people from Jersey visit the Emirates on their holidays, we would encourage more Emiratis to visit us to enjoy the beauty of our island, its landscape and environment and to receive the warm welcome for which Jersey is renowned, he added. "As a Government, it is our desire in Jersey not just to deepen the relationship that already exists between our finance industries, but also to broaden that relationship across a variety of economic sectors in order to build a trusting, respectful and mutually beneficial partnership". - Emirates News Agency, WAM
