Superbus road test in Capital
Abu Dhabi, April 11, 2011 (WAM) - A Superbus that hit speeds up to 250kmph will be road tested by the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport later this month, indicating that the vehicle might make its actual debut in the country.
The prototype of the Superbus that can carry 23 passengers was unveiled at the International Public Transport Association’s 59th Conference UITP in Dubai on Sunday.
The vehicle is built on a combination of Formula 1 and Aerospace technology and can cut the travel time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to 30 minutes. The eco-friendly bus, which is powered by 1,200kg lithium iron phosphate batteries, is a cross between a limousine and a bus and is touted as the next big thing in public transport.
At 15m-long and 2.5m-wide, the Superbus has similar dimensions to a conventional bus, but due to the seating arrangement without a centre aisle, the height is just 1.7m.
