Rashed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson set to represent Team Abu Dhabi in Grand Prix
Abu Dhabi, April 13, 2011 (WAM) - Rashed Al-Tayer and John Tomlinson will represent Team Abu Dhabi in this weekend's Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi, which will host the opening two rounds of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The pair will line-up alongside nine rival boats for two races on Thursday and Friday and will be looking to build upon the form that both crewmen showed last season. Team Abu Dhabi runs the number five boat built by Victory and running with Victory V12 engines.
Thirty-two year old Al-Tayer is keen to achieve a podium finish on his home Grand Prix, which will take place on a challenging course off Lulu Island under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC). Team Abu Dhabi runs under the auspices of the ADIMSC and the overall management of Salem Al-Rumaithi.
Al-Tayer made his Class 1 racing debut in Brazil last season and has taken part in 10 races to date and amassed a pair of wins in Uddevalla and one at the opening race in Abu Dhabi last season.
Throttleman Tomlinson hails from Miami in the United States and made his Class 1 racing debut in 1997. The 48-year-old has vast experience racing around the globe and, in a race career spanning 24 years, has earned a staggering 132 race wins and lifted 40 national titles. Tomlinson was World and European champion in 1997 and has sealed five Class 1 race victories in Russia, Norway and the UAE.
The Team Abu Dhabi duo is expecting fierce competition from the returning Qatar Team and Dubai's powerful Victory Team. Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis head the Qatar Team in Spirit of Qatar 96 and are joined by Class 1 rookie Ali Al-Neama and his Italian throttleman Matteo Nicolini in Spirit of Qatar 95. Defending World Champions, Arif Saif Al-Zazeen and Nador Bin Hendi, represent the Victory Team. Other teams in the line-up have been entered from Italy, the UK, Norway and Austria.
The Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi timetable gets underway with registration and scrutineering today (Wednesday), before teams are permitted to carry out their first official practice of the new season in a two-hour window on Wednesday afternoon.
There will be a second 30-minute practice session at the start of a hectic Thursday action on the racecourse. The first Edox Pole Position of the new season gets underway at 10.15hrs and this will determine the starting order for the first of the weekend's two Grand Prix, which starts at 15.30hrs on Thursday afternoon.
Crews will be permitted a third and final official practice session on Friday morning and the second of the weekend's Class 1 races starts at 15.30hrs on Friday afternoon. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
