UAE donates US$1.4 million to the international Counter-Piracy Trust Fund
Abu Dhabi, April 18, 2011 (WAM) - In the run-up to the high-level, public-private international counter-piracy conference in Dubai, jointly organised by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and global marine terminal operator DP World on 18 and 19 April, H. H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, announced a significant contribution to the international Counter-Piracy Trust Fund, the international community's main financial instrument to implement projects linked to the struggle against maritime piracy.
Delivering a clear example of the sort of public-private partnerships the high-level conference is aiming to develop, the UAE Government and UAE-based maritime- and related industry will offer an expected total of US$1.4 million. These donations will be announced during the international fundraiser event co-chaired by the UAE and the United Nations on Tuesday morning 19 April during the conference.
In 2010, the Trust Fund had a total operational budget that did not exceed USD 4.5 million. The UAE contribution is therefore significant. In addition, the contribution by UAE industry will mark the first time in its 18-month existence that international industry contributes to the Trust Fund transforming the instrument from government-only to a truly public-private enterprise.
The fundraiser, a direct result from a personal appeal of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan requesting the UAE to help deliver on one of the main recommendations in a recent high-profile counter-piracy report, is intended to support the Trust Fund for years to come and provides a momentum to create new partnerships between governments and industry, between "North" and "South", and specifically between the regions and countries affected by maritime piracy. It represents a significant opportunity to promote and expand ownership of on-going international counter-piracy efforts through ministerial-level and top-industry buy-in.
Under the theme "Global Challenge, Regional Responses: Forging A Common Approach to Maritime Piracy", the conference will be attended by more than 20 Foreign Ministers, Senior Representatives from a further 25 countries, the United Nations and a host of other international organisations, scores of industry leaders, and international experts on maritime security and community development issues.
The UAE's position as a global hub for trade and commerce together with its significant regional and international partnerships are expected to make the event a key platform for the coordination of the urgent international response to end the far reaching devastating threats of piracy. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
