Al Roumi: Constitution guarantees equal opportunities

Abu Dhabi, April 20, 2011 (WAM) - The constitution of the United Arab Emirates has guaranteed social justice and equal opportunities to all citizens, irrespective of their gender, Minister of Social Affairs Maryam Al Roumi. This came in a statement made yesterday by Al Roumi to mark 36th week for deaf people, celebrated in the UAE between 21 and 27 April under the theme: "Empowering deaf women under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".
"The UAE was keen on ratifying the UN convention to boost the rights of people with disabilities, including women, to guarantee that they equally enjoy human rights and basic liberties," she said. Al Roumi underlined the active role played by UAE deaf women, thanks to the unlimited support of the country's wise leadership. "A recent study conducted by the Ministry of Social Affairs has shown that deaf women in the UAE are capable of learning, working, raising a family and integrating into society." - Emirates News Agency, WAM
