The Ministry of Labour protects the rights of workers

Abu Dhabi, May 1, 2011 (WAM) - The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour Mubarak Saeed Al Dhahiri has stressed the commitment of the ministry to preserve the rights of workers, provide appropriate work environment and good living conditions to them in accordance with the directives of the leadership.
He added that the ministry aims to achieve the strategic objectives to ensure the interests of production parties and protect the workers in line with the international labour criteria, and the national laws that respect the human rights principles.
This came at the sidelines of the Workers' Marathon event organised by the ministry at Yas Circuit in Abu Dhabi with participation of 3, 000 workers to mark the International Workers Day.
On his part, Maher Hamad Al Oubed, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry for Inspection Affairs, said the ministry has been steadily striving to stabilise the labour market through implementation of a number of initiatives, among others, the Wages Protection System, the control tool to ensure the labour get their salaries on time. "The salary system service at the electronic portal of the ministry allows a worker to communicate with the ministry electronically to enquire about the delay of his salary", he added.
He referred to the labour accommodation measures endorsed by the Cabinet, and conform to the international labour accommodation criteria. A move, he said could enhance the labour productivity and reflect positively on interests of employers.
Al Oubed praised the efforts of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company "du" for sponsoring the Workers Marathon for the second year in a row.
Farid Faraidooni, Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Affairs, du, congratulated the workers on the World Workers Day, thanking the ministry for giving du the opportunity to partake in such events.
Qasim Jamil, Director of the Guidance Department at the ministry, said the ministry was keen this year to organise a number of sessions nationwide to mark the World Workers Day under the theme: Workers Are Our Partners in the Development. He added the UAE nationals with the special needs, working with the private sector will be honoured on May 2, at Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai.
He added that a Cricket Match will be held on May 6 at Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium, indicating that a number of sessions will be held nationwide to mark the international labour event.
At the end of Marathon the awards were presented to the winners; the first winner bagged Dh10, 000 and the gold medal, the second winner received Dh8, 000 and the silver medal, the third winner got Dh5, 000 and bronze medal, the fourth received Dh4, 000, the fifth bagged Dh3, 000, while the sixth to the tenth winners received Dh1, 000 each, and the winners from the 11th to the 40th received Dh500 each. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
