GCC interior ministers welcome calm in Bahrain, slam Iran's claim on Arabian Gulf

Abu Dhabi, May 4, 2011 (WAM) - The GCC ministers of interior yesterday welcomed the restoration of calm and stability in Bahrain and denounced remarks by a top Iranian army officer on the Arabian Gulf identity.
While reviewing the course of security coordination and cooperation between the regular 28th meeting and 12th consultative meeting in light of the regional and international rapid security events and developments and their bearings on the security and stability of the GCC member states, the ministers in a statement they issued at the end of their 12 consultative meeting here welcomed the restoration of stability in Bahrain and praised the prudence of its wise leadership. The meeting was chaired by HH Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and attended by GCC interior ministers and GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdul Latif Al Zayani, who participated in the meeting for the first since he assumed his job.
The ministers lauded the loyal people of Bahrain for rallying behind their leader and placing the higher interests of their country above any other considerations within the framework of the common will of the ruler and the ruled under the comprehensive reform programme launched by HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The minister strongly decried the Iranian intervention in the internal affairs of Bahrain as a breach of international charters and principles of good neighbourliness and affirmed the legitimacy of the deployment of the Peninsula Shield forces as per request from the host Bahrain.
The ministers blasted as "provocative and irresponsible" a statement made by Iran's chief of staff who has said the Arabian Gulf belonged to Iran.
''These remarks contradict the principles of good neighbourliness, mutual respect, and non-interference into others' internal affairs, tenets of the OIC and the UN Charter, ''the ministers said in their final statement, affirming that the Gulf belongs to the Arab identity and will remain so.
On terrorism, the ministers reiterated the GCC's firm stance against terrorism and extremism in all their manifestations and shapes no matter what their motives, justifications and sources.
They hoped the killing of Osama bin Laden would boost efforts being made by the international community to combat terrorism. They said efforts should be maximised to wipe out all types of assistance, incitement and acts that are against Islamic values. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
