Dubai Customs foils attempts to smuggle drugs

Dubai, May 23, 2011 (WAM) - Dubai Customs inspection team at Dubai Cargo Village have successfully foiled three separate attempts for smuggling heroin and cocaine which were cleverly concealed in lady handbags inside three parcels in transit.
Omar Ahmed Almuhairi, Senior Manager of Air Cargo Operations Department at Dubai Customs said: "Two parcels were coming from an Asian country in their way to an European country- as per to the customs declaration, their similar contents were bags and clothes. These doubtful contents were ascertained when the X-ray image machine showed anomalies in areas inside the stuffed lady handbags.
The third parcel was originated from an African country in its way to an European country. Its contents were handbags and accessories. The X-ray image machine also showed anomalies in different areas inside the shipment. subsequently, after searching the three parcels manually, officers extracted some substances with characteristics of opium. The Mobile Lab at Dubai Customs was called and after examining the substance by using its most advanced technicalities, it reported that the two detained substances were narcotics, namely, heroin and cocaine which weighed 3kg.
Within the framework of jointly coordination with Dubai Police General Directorate of Antic-Narcotic
Office, the confiscated parcels were taken into custody and along with seizures of report referred for further legal actions and disposition.
Omar Almuhairi appreciated the efforts made by Dubai Customs in intercepting attempts of infiltrating narcotics to the local use with the awareness that such hazardous activities end up with endangering well-being of the community in which we live. Customs authority, armed with its national well trained inspectors who join specialised training courses in areas of technical inspection methods, stands as front-line defendant for these communities, he explained.
The attempts of smugglers in transporting drugs and other prohibited items via Dubai ports have become impossible with the availability of efficiencies and highly capable inspectors along with using most internationally advanced inspection machines, he concluded. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
