Seoul shares open higher on steel, tech gains
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks got off to a strong start on Wednesday, fueled by firm rises in blue-chip steelmakers and technology companies, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 5.78 points, or 0.28 percent, to 2,105.49 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Shares gathered ground across the board with steelmakers leading the climb. Industry leader POSCO gained nearly 2 percent and its smaller rival Hyundai Steel jumped nearly 4 percent.
Techs were also bullish with chip giant Hynix Semiconductor rising more than 2 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,077.55 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., up 4.45 won from Tuesday's close.
