The date of presidential elections was set in Turkmenistan

Majlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan agreed to nominate the presidential elections in Turkmenistan on Sunday, February 12, 2012.

In a document released Friday by the local press said that this decision was made in accordance with Article 63 of the Constitution of Turkmenistan, Article 7 of the Law of Turkmenistan "On elections of President of Turkmenistan."

Acting President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the government meeting recently said that "the coming presidential elections in Turkmenistan should take place in atmosphere of openness and transparency."

At a recent meeting of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendum of Turkmenistan, said that "the main task is to do all that forthcoming elections were organized in strict accordance with the country's electoral laws and rules of international law."

According to the Constitution, the president of Turkmenistan must be a citizen of Turkmenistan, who was born in Turkmenistan, at least forty years old and no older than seventy years, who knows the state language, within the past fifteen years been resident in Turkmenistan and working in state bodies, public associations, enterprises in institutions and organizations.

Presidential term is five years.
