Visit to Parchin site needed an agreement: Iran’s IAEA envoy

TEHRAN, Feb. 25 (MNA) – The IAEA delegation that recently visited Iran was not allowed to inspect the Parchin military site since no agreement had been reached in this regard, the Iranian ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency told Reuters on Thursday. The UN nuclear watchdog said on February 22 that its delegation, which visited Tehran from February 21 to 22, had failed to secure an agreement with Iran during talks over nuclear activities and that the Islamic Republic had rejected a request to visit the Parchin military site in southeast Tehran, according to Reuters. IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano’s spokeswoman, Gill Tudor, also said on February 22 that no further meetings had been planned. Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh said, “For any visit and access there should be some sort of modality and agreement. “It was assumed that after we agreed on the modality then access would be given. Since the modality was not concluded due to time constraints… this was not possible.” Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian ambassador said that Tehran wants more talks with the UN nuclear watchdog. “Our position is that we are going to continue the talks for cooperation with the agency, and we hope that this process will be successfully going on. “We need a quiet environment, a calm environment to continue our professional work with the agency.” “We try to be cooperative,” Soltanieh said, adding, “We are dealing with the questions, and we are trying to remove ambiguities.”
