Abu Dhabi Police introduces motorised Segway ambulance

Abu Dhabi, Dec 11, 2012 (WAM) - An ambulance in the form of a motorised Segway will provide medical attention in congested areas, resulting in faster treatment for those in critical conditions, Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement on Sunday according to a report in "Gulf News". The vehicle can reach a speed of 20km per hour and is powered by a battery giving it the capacity to cover distances of around 39km per hour. The environmentally-friendly Segway can carry a weight of 117kg and is equipped with advanced medical equipment. It will be operated by one driver and will be used to bring supplies and medical aid - but is not large enough to carry passengers. Lt Col Mohammad Ebrahim Al Ameri, Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Emergency and Public Safety Directorate said the new ambulance will be available on the Corniche, in malls and in areas of exhibitions and festivities. He added: “The vehicle is highly efficient in providing the medical services which Abu Dhabi Police offers and helps in the fast arrival to the sick and injured if needed.” Major Butti Khalifa Al Mazroui, Director of the Emergency and Public Safety Administration said that the vehicle contains an oxygen tank and mask, equipment to test the vital signs, sugar levels and blood pressure as well as a defibrillator. The newest addition to the taskforce’s service vehicles was unveiled in the capital’s Marina Mall. – Gulf News
