US & JAPAN STILL OFFER EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's traditional trade partners such
as the United States and Japan still offer export opportunities despite the
projection of slower imports from these countries.

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) chief executive
officer, Noharuddin Nordin said although imports would be slower, there was
still a demand in several segments such as food and agricultural products,
furniture as well as textiles and apparel.

"Although, overall imports from the United States has fallen and will
continue to do so, it does not mean that there is no demand.

"So, we cannot neglect these countries as they still account for a large
percentage of our total exports. Trading will continue with only the amount and
value being reduced," he told reporters after delivering his opening remarks at
Matrade's business consultation session here Thursday.

He said to further boost Malaysia's exports, Matrade would continue
promoting the country's capability through selected sectors such as furniture,
fashion and design products.

"The oil and gas as well as health and medical care sectors have also been
identified to brand Malaysia as a provider of sophisticated services," he added.

He said for this year a total of 98 promotional programmes had been
outlined.

The programmes include 48 promotional booths, 15 specialised marketing
missions, 29 trade fairs, four incoming buying missions and two joint-promotion
programmes.

"We will also be mobilising our officers around the world to intensify
efforts by them to identify market opportunities and buyers," he added.
