UN Secretary General arrives in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, February 4, 2009 (WAM) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon yesterday said "the crossings in Gaza strip must be opened" to allow humanitarian and relief aid into the devastated Strip after 3 weeks of Israeli bombardment which started on December 27th, 2008.
Answering a question on the UN's position on Hamas' latest offer of a one-year "true" truce in return of the opening by Israel of Gaza crossings, Ki-moon said "We must have the ceasefire (in Gaza) durable and sustainable through diplomatic efforts."
The UN Chief's remarks came in statements to the press upon arrival this afternoon in Abu Dhabi.
"The longer the ceasefire holds, the better for the peace process in the region (Middle East)", Ki-moon added.
Observers here say the situation in Gaza and efforts for reconciliation among Palestinian factions might be discussed by Ki-moon and Arab ministers already in the UAE.
On his 2-day visit to the UAE, Ki-moon will hold several meetings with UAE senior officials.
