UAE gears up for celebrating Jerusalem as the 2009 Arab Cultural Capital

Abu Dhabi, February 5, 2009 (WAM) - Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development HE Abdul Rahman Al Owais received yesterday the Palestinian Ambassador to UAE Dr Khairi Al Oraidi and Cultural Attache at the embassy Maisa Harb.
At a meeting attended by the Executive Director of the Ministry Bilal Al Budoor, they discussed aspects of coordination between the two sides for celebrating Jerusalem as the 2009 Arab Cultural Capital.
Owais asserted UAE's commitment for celebrating Jerusalem as the Arab Cultural capital this year, as Jerusalem carves an important niche in the hearts of the people of UAE, both on the official and the popular levels.
The minister reviewed the extensive plan for the yearlong celebration in association with various institutions and NGOs. These events will be powerful enough to reassert the Arab character of Jerusalem and to show the entire world as well as the coming generations how dear Jerusalem is to Arabs.
The ambassador later said that the joint programmes for celebrating Jerusalem as 2009 Cultural capital was discussed at length during the meeting.
The Arab Capital of Culture is an initiative undertaken by the United Nation's cultural organization, UNESCO, to promote and celebrate Arab culture and encourage cooperation in the Arab region. It is part of UNESCO's global Cultural Capitals Program, which has included the Arab countries since 1998.
It was in 2006, the Arab Ministers of Culture chose Occupied Jerusalem as the 2009 Arab Capital of Culture.
Al Oraidi underlined the powerful role UAE's ministry of Culture has to play for enlivening the Arab character of Jerusalem through various programmes, events and cultural festivities.
Al Oraidi said that the minister alluded during the meeting to the directives given by President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to give all the care and attention to Jerusalem and to make use of all various capabilities to celebrate Jerusalem as 2009 Arab Cultural Capital. The Ministry of Culture has prepared several programmes to lead this event into success, Al Oraidi noted.
Several events will be organised in UAE itself in support of the yearlong celebration, and these include exhibitions, heritage festivals, artistic and literary events and publication of books on Jerusalem. A Cultural week has been planned by the ministry in the UAE to draw attention of the people to this major international event.
