EAD and Bahraini Authority to cooperate on wildlife, fisheries and marine environment conservation

Abu Dhabi, February 5, 2009 (WAM) - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday between the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the General Directorate for the Protection of Marine Resources (GDPMR), Kingdom of Bahrain, which constitutes an agreement for cooperation in the fields of wildlife, fisheries and marine environment.
The MoU was signed by HE Majid Ali Al Mansouri, EAD's Secretary General and Mr. Jassim Al-Qaseer, Director General, GDMPR.
The two organizations agreed to cooperate in the conservation and development of fisheries and marine resources and environment, within their areas of jurisdiction. They also agreed to cooperate to develop capabilities and techniques related to the management of biodiversity, particularly marine resources and wildlife. Both organizations will exchange their experiences in the field of the strategies preparation and implementation.
Moreover, the two organizations agreed to cooperate in capacity-building in the areas of assessment, monitoring and environmental studies, wildlife and fish stock and fish farming and environmental control and conservation of biological diversity. It was also agreed to conduct joint applied research in areas of common interest and establish integrated databases.
Both sides agreed to collaborate in the areas of fish and marine resources management and conservation, management and development of nature reserves, and exchange of information and expertize in environmental specifications and standards adopted by the two parties.
According to the agreement, both entities will be exchanging expertise in the field of legislation on environmental protection, conservation of marine resources and biodiversity. Experts from EAD and GDPMR will coordinate, particularly in areas related to regional and international conventions. It was also agreed to coordinate in the organization of conferences, workshops, symposiums and scientific sessions.
To facilitate the implementation of activities under this MoU, a joint technical committee will be established. This committee will meet at least once a year to follow up the implementation of the agreement. The Memorandum will be in effect for four years from the date of signature.
