Turkish company to launch mine-protected vehicle at IDEX 2009

Abu Dhabi, Feb 15, 2009 (WAM) - Otokar, the Turkish armoured vehicle designer and manufacturer, will launch a brand-new, mine-protected armoured vehicle at IDEX 2009 (International Defence Exhibition '&' Conference), which takes place from February 22 to 26 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The KAYA, developed by Otokar in response to the growing worldwide demand for mine-resistant vehicles, combines superior mine and ballistic protection with high levels of cross-country capability.
Serdar Gorg , General Manager of Otokar, said: "We are glad to launch our latest armoured vehicle, KAYA, at IDEX 2009. The show is a good opportunity for us to showcase our engineering and R'&'D capabilities".
The KAYA uses a Daimler Chrysler Unimog 5000 running chassis to provide excellent cross country capabilities that have been tested on different terrain. During the KAYA's design phase, mine blasts under the vehicles hull and wheels were simulated using special software. These blast tests were carried out successfully as per NATO standards.
Gorg noted that Otokar had more than 25,000 vehicles in operation worldwide, across its product range. "The KAYA effectively complements our other vehicles and will be an affordable and effective solution for force protection in conflict zones".
In addition to the KAYA, Otokar will display its "COBRA" armoured vehicle and its "Otokar APC" armoured personnel carrier at IDEX 2009.
IDEX's ninth edition is organized by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) in association with the UAE Armed Forces GHQ. In total, 50 countries will be represented at IDEX 2009, which is expected to draw more than 45,000 visitors including government and industry leaders.
