IDEX 2009 to see big defence deals: IDEX Director General

The 9th edition of the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2009) will see unfrequented expansion as well as the launch of shows and initiatives for the first time in its history, according to the Director of IDEX Mohammed Al-Mashghouni.
In a statement to Dira' Al Watan Magazine, Al-Mashghouni said organizers of the Middle East's largest ever defence show are this year especially interested in naval equipment adding that for the first time in the history of the show, ships will berth at the quay which has been recently constructed opposite the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
IDEX 2009 will open today with a record number of companies from 50 countries and over 150 official delegations from around the world in attendance.
This, he noted, indicates the show's steady growth over the years to become one of the biggest and most important events for the global defence industry. It is in contrast with the first edition of IDEX (1993) which was attended by only 350 exhibitors.
This year's edition of IDEX, he remarked, will be showcasing technologies and services related to homeland security, and is poised to indicate greater spending worldwide on anti-terror, national defence operations.
"In all, more than 900 exhibitors from 50 countries will be represented at this year's IDEX. Big industry players such as Thales, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and others have confirmed their participation at the show which is expected to draw more than 40,000 visitors including government and industry leaders", he said.
Many defence deals are expected at the current IDEX edition, according to Al-Mashghouni. The previous edition, he added, saw more than AED 2 billion of defence contracts.
UAE will have the biggest national pavilion at IDEX 2009 with 89 UAE companies exhibiting products on 10517 square meters. Those include Mubadala, Tawazun, Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding Company, Advanced Integrated Systems, Caracal, Bin Jabr and others.
IDEX 2009 will feature land, sea and air vehicles and systems, radar, electronic warfare and electro-optic systems, weapons and ordnance, C4ISR, CBRN defence, homeland and internal security, simulation and training, logistics, medical and survival systems and personal equipment.
IDEX 2009 will be held from February 22 to 26. The show is organized by ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company) in association with the UAE Armed Forces GHQ. ADNEC has made significant investments to improve exhibition facilities at the venue and integrate the naval element more closely with the show. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
