GCC earmarks US$1.6 billion for reconstruction of Gaza

Riyadh, March 2, 2009 (WAM) - The Gulf Cooperation Council announced yesterday it has earmarked US$1.6 billion for the reconstruction of Gaza Strip which was severely devastated by the Israel war machine.
In a statement issued at the end of the ministerial council today, the GCC countries reiterated their commitment to stand beside the Palestinian people in efforts to reconstruct the Gaza Strip.
The ministerial council also decided to establish a programme for reconstruction of Gaza whose membership will be open for all Arab countries. The programme will be managed by a coordinating committee which will coordinate with the Islamic Development Bank and Palestinian legitimate institutions.
The programme will have a maximum tenure of five years.
A field office will be set up to oversee execution of projects funded by the programme.
