MOH asserts that UAE is self sufficient of blood and its components since 1984

Ministry of Health asserted that UAE became self sufficient of blood and its components since 1984, the year when the country stopped importing blood from outside for treatment purposes.
Executive Director of Medical Practice and Licensing at the MOH and Chairman of the Higher National Blood Transfusion Committee Dr. Amin Bin Hussain Al-Amiri said that there never happened any deficiency in the reserves of blood or its basic components in the country at all.
People from over 77 nationalities donate blood at various blood banks in the UAE, the Emiratis ranking the first in donating blood since the last 15 years, Al Amiri noted.
Responding to an article published by a local newspaper expressing concern about the extent of self sufficiency of blood in the country, Al Amiri also said that the UAE's various government institutions like the Ministry of Health and the Health authorities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are always keen on ensuring sustainable level of blood reserves and maintaining self sufficiency of blood and its basic components.
He also stressed that the Higher National Committee for Blood Transfusion guarantees that the blood and its components are constantly available in the country in secure ways and are safely preserved.
The blood is made available to any healthcare institution in the country in times of emergency, he noted.
