Mekong Export Festival 2009 holds

(KPL) The Mekong Export Festival 2009 was held at Thoong Si Muang in Udon Thani province of Thailand kicked off last Friday and it will runs till 15 March, with its try to boost trade between Laos and Thailand.
The Mekong Export Festival is the first such fair, conducted by Thai Ministry of Commerce aimed at boosting bilateral trade between Thailand and Laos, with cross-border trading being the key channel for commerce between the countries.
Thai Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Siripol Yodmuangcharoen said that the event hoped to strengthen and boost export growth between local enterprises from two countries.
He said that the Thai government will facilitate cross-border trade by focusing on cooperation with the private sector and implementation of the economic-corridor strategy, which assists Thai and Lao businesses to invest and trade in neighboring countries.
Mr Yodmuangcharoen told the press that the event also expects to promote Thai Lao and Lao Thai products to buyers from other neighbouring countries, which will help counterbalance the declining purchasing power in key overseas markets.
“The Mekong Export Fair was an efficient showcase for Thai and Lao enterprises wishing to penetrate other markets in neighbouring countries. The event - with 460 booths - is expected to draw up to 100,000 visitors from Thailand, Laos and other neighbouring countries. I do believe promoting cross-border trade was one of the easiest ways to expand exports, given the low costs and short distances involved in transporting goods,” he continued.
According to minister counselor, commercial at the Thai Embassy in Vientiane capital, the Thai’s exports to Laos are forecast to increase by 12 per cent this year, despite the effects of the global economic crisis.
An exhibitor from Laos said, “this was my first time taking part in the Mekong Export Festival, I brought my handicrafts products which produced by local women from remote areas across the country. Our products include bags, wallets and cotton Sinh”.
A Thai official said that Laos’s Thanaleng river port and Thailand’s Nong Khai province recent officially opened a historic rail link across the Mekong River, which would also facilitate trade and investment growth between the two countries and Nong Khai was the major gateway for cross-border trade with Laos
