Sharjah Ruler opens "Sharjah Theatre Week"
Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, attended Tuesday night the opening ceremony of the 19th edition of the Sharjah Theatre Week, which is being organised by the Sharjah Culture and Information Department.
During the annual event which would last until March 27, a number of local and foreign drama groups will present 18 plays on the stages of the Culture Palace and the Sharjah Institute for Theatrical Arts.
The opening ceremony of the event attracted a large number of dignitaries, including sheikhs, senior officials, special guests of the Sharjah Theatre Festival, including artists, intellectuals, as well as theatre arts lovers.
In his inaugural address, the Director General of Sharjah Culture and Information Department, Abdullah Al-Owais, said local theatre was moving steadily in its successful march through the Sharjah Theatre Week, which kicked-off in 1984, adding that the event had made generous contributions in building the UAE national personality, particularly, theatre artists.
Al-Owais attributed the success of theatre in the UAE to the Sharjah Ruler, who, he said, continued to be the source of inspiration, moral and material support for theatre art and artists ever since, adding that Sheikh Sultan continues to enrich theatrical arts with his generous contributions, being a successful playwright who had presented to the Arab theatre five great plays, including "The Return of Holako", "The Issue", "The Reality is a Carbon Copy of the Original", "Alexander the Great", and "Nimrod".
He expressed profound gratitude to Sheikh Sultan and to all those who had contributed in one way or the other to ensure the success of the event.
