Mohamed bin Zayed condemns violence against children
Abu Dhabi,6 April 2009 (WAM) - His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has visited a critically ill 9 year old girl in Al Mafraq Hospital allegedly the victim of violent abuse by her 27 year old stepmother. His Highness was accompanied by his daughter, Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and visited the child after the case was brought to his attention by Abu Dhabi Police.
Following the visit, His Highness made the following statement: "The sanctity of childhood has always been an essential element of our culture and an alleged incident such as this is completely inconsistent with our traditional values. This case is tragic in terms of its catastrophic impact on the victim. It should also be alarming to everyone that an incident such as this could occur within our society, which has always placed such emphasis on the protection of children. All members of the community must speak out against abuse of this kind, and condemn any form of violence against children".
His Highness has instructed the hospital to provide the child involved with the maximum levels of care and attention, and Abu Dhabi Police have appointed a female counsellor to provide ongoing assistance.
