Hamdan honours Ruler of Sharjah as Distinguished Personality of the Year

Sharjah, April 7, 2009 (WAM) - H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, honored yesterday H. H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, as the Distinguished Personality of the Year as part of the 11th edition of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Award for Distinguished Academic Performance.
Sheikh Sultan was granted the accolade for his persistent services to upgrade the standards of education and his remarkable contributions and support to education, science, knowledge and culture globally as well as for his leading role in preserving the Arab and Islamic heritage and culture. The Ruler was also honoured for his openness towards and interaction with other cultures.
''Your contributions act like minarets decorating the sky of our dear country,'' Sheikh Hamdan said addressing Sheikh Sultan.
''It's a good omen for our nation to congregate here today to recognise the champions of excellence .... We are celebrating the future of the community, the nation and humanity at large ..... We are extremely delight as we are adding a new block in the edifice of innovation and in the march of education,'' said Sheikh, who is also patron of the Award.
''What we have sensed of the positives of the Award at local and Gulf levels prompts us to announce today the introduction of three new categories for the higher education to include the distinguished university student, best scientific innovation and best project,'' Sheikh Hamdan disclosed.
Sheikh Hamdan also announced a programme for nurturing top achievers as of the next edition of the Award.
H.E. Dr Hanif Hassan Ali, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Award's Board of Trustees, addressed the evening also saying Sheikh Sultan was named the Distinguished Personality of the Year for his unstinted support and spread of education, science, knowledge and culture locally, regionally and internationally.
''The Award, which was launched 11 years ago to improve quality of education and promote the philosophy of excellence among learners and educators at local, Gulf and Arab levels, has taken its aspired natural international place after it launched the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Teacher/UNESCO,'' the minister said.
He said jury of the Award's 11th edition had received 312 local entries including 94 nominations from the Gulf countries. Participations stood at 37 from 11 Arab countries.
The special night was attended by H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Aviation Authority, H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, H.E Huamid Al Qattami, Minister of Health, H.E. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, and a number of top officials.
The Award participates in improving the quality of educational system, supporting all pre-higher education learners and the individuals and institutions entrusted with educating these learners. All this through positive cooperation and competition with the hope that our educational outcome would be recognized among the advanced categories in the world.
The Award aims to upgrade performance, mastery and creativity in the education domain, encourage initiatives, innovation and excellence in all literary and scientific domain, contribute in creating modern and improved educational environment and favourable conditions that foster innovations, advancement and excellence and honour all talented and creative categories and parties involved in the educational sector.
