UAE-UK MPs hold talks
Abu Dhabi, April 7, 2009 (WAM) - H.E. Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair, Speaker of Federal National Council (FNC), received yesterday visiting Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin.
The two speakers explored mechanisms to enhance cooperation and coordination between the two houses towards diverse regional and international issues.
Roles of parliaments in addressing socio-economic and political challenges the world is facing and finding solutions and remedies to them were also touched during the meeting. Role of parliaments in tackling the current global financial crisis was also figured high in the talks where the two speakers hoped the next month international parliamentary conference in Geneva on the crisis would come out with positive recommendations contributing to solving the problem.
''The UAE and UK maintain strong bonds thanks to the care lent by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan,'' Al Ghurair said, noting to the special relationship between the FNC and the House of Commons.
Al Ghurair also dwelt on the UAE parliamentary experience and the impact of the country's political reforms on the empowerment of the house.
Turning to the issue of UAE islands, occupied by Iran, Al Ghurair said ''The UAE is hoping for wider role by Britain at international forums that can help the UAE restore its islands .....The UAE is also pinning high hopes on the EU's support at international gatherings.
In a joint press conference with his guest, the FNC Speaker said the UAE is offering easy, smooth facilities to most EU citizens in regard to entry visa and is demanding reciprocal policy for its citizens who travel to these countries for treatment and tourism, but face major hurdles to enter the UK.
For his part, Speaker of the House of Commons Michael Martin praised the UAE as a model of peace, tolerance, freedom, justice and equality.
He also appreciated the role of the FNC internally and externally and commended the UAE woman's involvement in the political life of the country and her success in taking up jobs in different sectors including the judiciary.
On the islands' issue, he said the UK is in favour of a settlement that is acceptable to both parties. He stressed the need for adopting peaceful, diplomatic means to resolve the issue.
