President receives House of Commons Speaker
Abu Dhabi, April 7, 2009 (WAM) - President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan received yesterday at the Al-Bateen palace, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister, H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin, who is currently on a visit to the UAE.
Sheikh Khalifa warmly welcomed the Speaker and his accompanying delegation and commended the excellent bilateral relations between the UAE and Britain.
They discussed relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries and other issues of mutual interest.
The UAE President expressed satisfaction on the great development in bilateral relations between the UAE and the United Kingdom. He also expressed deep belief that the meeting between the UAE's Federal National Council and the House of Commons will reflect positively on joint cooperation between the two Houses, in particular and the two countries, in general.
Martin, for his side, expressed happiness for visiting the UAE and meeting with the UAE President and other top UAE officials. He said the visit will further boost relations of friendship between the two countries. He expressed confidence that the talks he had held during the visit would be fruitful and constructive.
He said the visit had given him the opportunity to have first hand information about the UAE's successful parliamentary experience, which is one of the most significant in the region, adding that the visit had also offered the two sides the opportunity to share experience in parliamentary life.
He expressed the hope that relations between the UAE and the UK would witness more development and progress.
He commended the UAE for achieving comprehensive development under the able leadership of Sheikh Khalifa.
Present at the meeting were FNC Speaker, Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al-Ghurair, Chairman of the board of trustees of Zayed Foundation, H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister for Presidential Affairs, H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a number of sheikhs, ministers and other top officials, as well as British Ambassador, Edward Anthony Oakden.
